Cruise the timeless Mekong River in style on the Shompoo Cruise boat. This is either a two-day cruise upstream from Luang Prabang to the Huay Xai or downstream from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang, stopping for one night in Pak Beng. There are several stops at the Pak Ou caves and hill tribe villages along the way. For the whole journey you enjoy excellent uninterrupted views out of the Mekong and the thriving communities that depend on the river.
The boats are especially made for the Mekong River, at 35 metre long and made of precious local rosewood teak. With a sundeck salon area in the front, leading on to 10 tables surrounded by seats in the middle restaurant area, and the obligatory bar and lounging area in the back. There is no accommodation on board – this is provided in Pakbeng. With 2 lunches to be served onboard, the food is authentically Lao.
The cruises are limited to 40 passengers in order, to ensure plenty of space and comfort.
The crew comprises of an experienced captain, an engineer, a cook, a waiter and an English speaking tour guide.
The Shompoo is also a viable option if you’re interested in travelling between Laos and Thailand by boat.
